Somar is a proven oil finder, geoscientist with over 10 years upstream industry experience within the E&P sector, a MSc in Petroleum Geoscience from Royal Holloway-University of London and a BSc (Hons) in Earth Sciences and Hydrogeology from the University of Damascus. He is a fellow of the Geological Society and a member of the PESGB.

He has a range of applied experience within carbonate and clastic, conventional and unconventional reservoirs in exploring for oil and gas plays and in field development both offshore and onshore in the Middle East, North and West Africa, South America and Europe.

​Focusing the majority of his career on exploring for oil and gas in the Middle East, North and West Africa and South America, his main achievements are discovering the +100MMBO (2P) Alkhairat Oil Field in Syria, and 100% drilling success (3 out of 3) on unconventional gas discoveries totalling 30BCF in Morocco.
